Building a foundation for every name and need

Hi Santa Barbara!

My name's Cage Englander, I'm a Santa Barbara local, and I want to bring fresh energy to a stale education board.

About me

My dad taught as a substitute teacher in Santa Barbara. Most of his time was spent in special needs classrooms caring for those who were most disadvantaged. It was his care for these students that built my faith in the education system.

However, my faith was tested as I progressed through nearly every aspect of our county's public education system: charter school, public elementary, public junior high, public high school, and an alternative education program.

I witnessed teachers who taught valuable skills like auto shop work two jobs due to poor funding while administrations paid hundreds of thousands for ineffective social training.

This firsthand experience with our current education system motivated me to do something to make a change.

Why am I running?

1

I'm a better choice than the competition

Current board member Peter MacDougall does not possess adequate firsthand experience in the areas of the educational system he represents.

My firsthand experience going through the current education system in Santa Barbara has shown me what needs to be fixed.

2

The 3 main ideals

I am running to emphasize an equal playing field through promoting universal literacy, practical skills training, and special needs education. My mission is to ensure that every student is gifted with the same limitless potential.

3

Ensure our schools function for everyone, no matter what

We must fund classes like auto shop and wood shop that allow students to find success, with or without a college degree. The fact remains that most people in our community have not finished a higher education degree. This makes it essential we have paths available and funded for those who can not, or will not, attend college.

Literacy is the first step to equal outcome education

For our students to succeed we must ensure that they have the skills to read and write at grade level. As of the 2018-2019 school year only 55% of students were literate at grade level within the Santa Barbara Unified School District. Without being able to communicate with peers and teachers, it is impossible for any other initiatives to help our students who are underserved. We must better fund the needs of our most disadvantaged students.

4

Ensure our schools function for everyone, no matter what

We must fund classes like auto shop and wood shop that allow students to find success, with or without a college degree. The fact remains that approximately two thirds of our population have not attained a higher education degree. This makes it essential we have paths available and funded for those who can not, or will not, attend college. We must retain the American dream by bringing success within reach of everyone, regardless of academic achievement.

5

Fund special needs in our most critical times

Parents are put under immense stress during our current COVID-19 situation. For the average parent daily life can be overwhelming and for special needs parents this challenge is doubled. During this critical time, we must ensure there is enough funding in place to provide parents of special needs students with private assistance and tools for success.
